Film Screening - Taikon + Future in Your Hands
Monday 10th of March 6-8pm
Born in a Swedish camp in 1932, Romani activist and author Katarina Taikon altered the course of Sweden’s history. This documentary tells the story of a young girl who was denied education, but went on to become a leading author and human rights activist. It is a dramatic and vivid portrait of one of the most important advocates of human rights in 20th century Europe, set against the backdrop of the developing Swedish welfare state.
90min. | In Swedish with English subtitles
Also special screening of "Future In Your Hands" the short documentary by young Roma women in Glasgow, created as part of their ‘Community Catalyst’ training. Roma youth can face many barriers to meaningfully accessing education; something the young catalysts are passionate about changing. The film explores the importance of education through interviews with their high school teachers and a Roma professional breaking stereotypes. The teachers explain how they try to work with Roma kids in order for them to achieve their goals; and explain that if the kids are willing to grow, they will help with anything they can. This inspiring documentary highlights that with dedication to education, young people can overcome barriers and achieve their dreams.
10min. | In English
